Jose Chameleon aka Joseph Mayanja continues to inspire Uganda’s music
It is difficult to talk of Uganda’s music industry without mentioning Jose Chameleon. He is the first popular local artist that many Ugandans knew when they started to enjoy local music.
Jose Chameleon (real names Joseph Mayanja ) has probably been Uganda’s most popular musician in the first decade of the twenty first century. The musician that came into the music limelight with the Mama Mia hit has since released over 10 albums with songs in Luganda, English and Kiswahili. His music that was churned out over the years largely contributed towards the rejuvenation of Uganda Music at the turn of the century.

He is a pop icon in Uganda with his hits like Basiima Ogenze, Nekolera Mali and Bayuda that turned into daily phrases in the vocabulary of Ugandans. Over the years he has scooped a host of awards both locally and internationally, which include inaugural Pearl of Africa artist of the year, two accolades as the male artists of the year at the Peal of Africa Music Awards. He also scooped Kora Awards, Kissima Awards and an MTV international Award.
Jose Chameleon started his music career with a brief stint with the Ogopa DJs in Kenya where he recorded his first song Bageya before he fully returned to Uganda to launch into an illustrious music career. He is the leader of Leon Island music group, which produces his own music, and a host of other young talents.
